This release marks the first in a series of topical papers associated with the NMC’s Series of Virtual Symposia (formerly the Series of Online Conferences), which are designed to explore emerging topics in education and technology using social computing technologies to bring people together online in a way that offers many of the same affordances of a face-to-face conference.

Live Video Streaming Study is Now Online
Posted August 21st, 2007 by ehuangIn August 2007, my colleagues and I completed a study that examined eight live video streaming technologies in terms of their image quality, streaming quality, accessibility, setup efficiency, and cost. The eight technologies were Clipstream, DVTS, Flash, QuickTime, Real, VLC, VX30 and Windows Media. VLC came to the top of the chart in our study. Thanks to many of you who participated in our survey for the study. For easy and fast access, we have decided to publish the study online. You may find the findings and conclusions from our study immediately applicable to your teaching or production.

Time-to-Adoption Horizon: Four to Five Years
The time-honored activities of academic research and scholarly activity have benefited from the explosion of access to research materials and the ability to collaborate at a distance. At the same time, the processes of research, review, publication, and tenure are challenged by the same trends. The proliferation of audience- generated content combined with open-access content models is changing the way we think about scholarship and publication—and the way these activities are conducted.
